The Erris Gaeltacht of North Mayo, Ireland 1969

The Erris Gaeltacht of north Mayo is perhaps one of Ireland's best kept secrets. Isolated and underdeveloped, not many people outside of the county are even aware of its existence.

In Ros Dumhach (Rossport) Annraoí Ó Liatháin talks to the headmaster of the local national school Annraoí Ua Corrduibh. People here take pride in their native language, and there is no sign of it in serious decline, for now at least,

One problem that is ever-present, however, is that of emigration. Although the fishing is doing well, small farms cannot and do not continue to provide enough of a livelihood for people, and when people leave, the language goes with them. 'Gaeltacht' is a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. Over the course of a year producer and director Colm Ó Laoghaire and a film crew visited eight Gaeltacht areas. These are An Rinn (Ring) in Waterford, Bhaile Bhuirne agus Cúil Aodha (Ballyvourney and Coolea) in Cork, Corca Dhuibhne (Corkaguiny) in Kerry, Conamara (Connemara) in Galway, Oileáin Árann (Aran Islands) in Galway, Iorras (Erris) in Mayo, Anagaire, An Fál Carrach, Croithlí, Gaoth Dobhair agus Rann na Feirste (Annagary, Falcarragh, Crolly, Gweedore and Rannafast) in Donegal and Ráth Chairn (Rathcairn) in Meath.
