Self-criticism is a common way to try to motivate ourselves. And while it may make us do better (in the short-term), it certainly doesn't make us feel better. But here's a tip: Self-compassion and self-kindness can make us feel better in the short and long term and help us do better in the long term!

Studies show that criticizing ourselves for mistakes and personal flaws puts the brain under stress and can even induce "survival mode" -- a state in which we are constantly poised to fight or flee danger. In the short term, this leaves us with limited mental resources for problem-solving, managing emotions, and more. Over time, this survival state can drag down our physical and mental health and take a toll on our work and relationships.

However, by showing ourselves compassion -- by following the tip in the video -- we prevent additional stress, retain full mental capacity for problem solving, emotional regulation, and more, and start developing a growth mindset, which can make us more resilient and capable.

Self-compassion has many names -- self-kindness, grace, etc. -- but it boils down to showing ourselves the same understanding and acceptance we would show to a good friend in the same situation.
