IARC trains local health workers on excision of cervical precancers in Zambia

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPC) collaboratively organized their first joint workshop in Africa on simulation learning of electrosurgical excision of cervical precancers. The workshop was held at the Women and Newborn Hospital, University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, on 5 April 2022. The simulation learning demonstrated a procedure known as large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ).

The learning programme had a hybrid design, including both online and on-site training. A total of 16 local medical doctors and nurses involved in the Zambian national cervical cancer screening programme participated in the workshop.

The aim of this simulation learning session was to improve the participants’ skills in this very useful treatment method. The session covered the following practical topics: indications and principles, installation of the LLETZ equipment, steps of the procedure to ensure good-quality treatment, best practices to avoid complications, video demonstrations of real cases, follow-up of treated cases, and quality assurance. Many of the trainees will be future trainers in Zambia, ensuring a cascading impact of the workshop.
