In this video lesson, you will learn the simplest and most effective way to counter the Queen's Gambit chess opening as Black. The Queen's Gambit arises after the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4, where White offers a pawn sacrifice to gain control of the center.

After Black responds with 2...e6 — entering the Queen's Gambit Declined — and White plays 3.Nc3, Black can surprise their opponent with the Janowski Variation by playing 3...a6. This is a rare, solid, and powerful opening variation to counter the Queen's Gambit.

Only 1% of games feature this variation, which significantly increases your chances of catching opponents off guard early in the game.

Here's the best part: this opening variation can also be used against almost any of White's first moves, except for 1.e4, making it a universal and versatile opening system.
