This embroidered Thangka, over three meters long and more than 600 years old, was a gift from Emperor Yongle of Ming Dynasty to a Xizang’s master. Made with gold and colorful silk threads, it is one of only three surviving embroidered Thangkas from the Yongle period (1403-1424), with the other two in Xizang’s temple. In 2015, this masterpiece was bought home from the West by Shanghainese collector Liu Yiqian at over 300m RMB ($41m).
Liu also owns a bronze kettle from the Warring States period (475–221 bce). It is beautifully decorated with gold, silver and glass, with its lid features animal-shaped decorations.
Another treasured piece is the Qing Dynasty Qianlong-era (1736-1796) famille rose porcelain vase, which ranks among the most expensive Qing Dynasty ceramics.
The "holy grail" of Chinese ceramics, a Chenghua jigangbei, or "chicken cup", created in the Ming Dynasty (1328-1661) will also meet its visitors again after a decade. Liu purchased it, valued at 281 million HKD ($36 million), in 2014.
Apart from that, Liu’s Long Museum will also present an exhibition on March 22, featuring 200 rare cultural treasures, including jade, bronze, porcelain and Buddha statues.
Liu Yiqian, 63, a taxi driver turned collector, is now a well-known art buyer after gaining huge success in China’s capital market since reform and opening-up.
