We’ll use Ernest Hemingway--his work, his impact and his contributions--as a catalyst for deeper analysis and discussion about how to teach complicated figures. We’ll ask how and why certain narratives take hold, how these narratives shape our collective understanding, and how educators can help build a more authentic narrative. We’ll explore multiple approaches to help students ask better questions so they can more deeply understand a person’s impact and range of contributions while still honestly acknowledging who they were.
We will be joined by Marc Dudley, Professor of English and Africana Studies at North Carolina State University, with specializations in 20th Century American and African American literature(s), Lorena German, cofounder of the groups #DisruptTexts and Multicultural Classroom, director of pedagogy at EduColor and Chair of NCTE's Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English, and Crystal Monteiro, PBS Digital Innovator All-Star and educator for East Providence School District.
