Escalating the language row in India, south Indian state Tamil Nadu has replaced the Indian Rupee symbol with a Tamil letter in the state's budget, slated to be tabled in the assembly on March 14. The state has claimed that the central government in India is trying to impose the Hindi language — prevalent in the north India — on them. The symbol for India's national currency, "₹", is written in the Devanagari script. It is for the first time that an Indian state has rejected the national currency symbol.
