In Hindu mythology, the Jyotirlingas are a set of twelve sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. These Jyotirlingas are believed to be self-manifested or naturally occurring lingas (an abstract representation of Lord Shiva) that emit light (jyoti). Pilgrimage to these Jyotirlingas is considered highly auspicious and is an important part of Shaivism, the sect that worships Lord Shiva as the Supreme Being.
Each of the twelve Jyotirlingas is associated with a specific legend and location. Here is a list of the twelve Jyotirlingas and their respective locations:
Somnath: Located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra, Gujarat, the Somnath Temple is one of the most revered Jyotirlingas. It is believed to be the first Jyotirlinga and is associated with the moon god, Chandra.
Mallikarjuna: This Jyotirlinga is situated in the town of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is also known as Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple.
Mahakaleshwar: Located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is known for its unique idol of Lord Shiva facing south, unlike the other Jyotirlingas.
Omkareshwar: Situated on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada River, Omkareshwar is in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.
Kedarnath: This Jyotirlinga is located in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, near the Kedarnath Temple. It is associated with the Kedarnath shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Bhimashankar: Situated in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, Bhimashankar is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva appeared as a column of light to eliminate the demon Tripurasura.
Kashi Vishwanath: The Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and is one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. It is associated with the city of Varanasi, which is also known as Kashi.
Trimbakeshwar: This Jyotirlinga is found in the town of Trimbak, near Nashik in Maharashtra. It is associated with the source of the Godavari River.
Vaidyanath (Vaijnath): Located in Deoghar in the Santal Parganas region of Jharkhand, this Jyotirlinga is associated with Lord Shiva as the Divine Physician.
Nageshwar (Aundha Nagnath): Situated in the Dwarka district of Gujarat, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is associated with the story of the demon Daaruka.
Rameshwar (Ramanathaswamy): The Rameshwar Jyotirlinga is on Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu and is associated with the epic Ramayana, as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva before building a bridge to Lanka.
Grishneshwar: Located near Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is associated with a legend involving a devout woman named Kusuma.
Devotees undertake pilgrimages to these Jyotirlingas to seek blessings, offer prayers, and gain spiritual merit. These sacred sites are an integral part of the rich tapestry of Hindu religious and mythological traditions.
