Crown - Going Global from Hong Kong
The story of Crown Worldwide Group began six decades ago, when Jim Thompson boarded a plane headed for Yokohama, Japan. There, he started a company with $1,000 USD, and not long after, its first-ever shipment set sail from Japan. For a time, Thompson planted his entrepreneurial flag in Japan and worked to ease the burden of moving around the world for many families; an experience close to his own childhood experience living under the roof of his Navy officer father.
With the founding of Crown in Japan, Thompson’s moves were just getting started. Since those early days of the company, he eventually established its base in Hong Kong, and has grown it into an extraordinary global business with 260 locations across 50 countries. The services his company provides have helped millions of families relocate their lives and belongings around the world to help them settle into their new homes wherever they were destined.
Today, the Crown Worldwide Group has become the largest privately owned international logistics company and Thompson has transformed the company from its original roots as a moving company into the logistics provider for priceless art, as well as safekeeper of art, company records, and expensive wines.
Thompson’s life story is a reflection of Hong Kong and Asia’s remarkable development. During his career, he made all the right moves adapting to a changing era in Asia while witnessing and facilitating the mobility of people and their treasures around the world.
