STS-109 | Launch and Ascent | KSP Shuttle Short | 5000 Subscriber Special

STS-109 was the One hounded and eight mission of the Space Shuttle program and the first time that Columbia (OV-102) who was the oldest and heaviest in NASA’s fleet has flown into space in over 2 and a half years. Columbia was outfitted and upgraded with the newest tech at the time and also gained the NASA Meatball, United States Flag and her name on her wings to bring her more into uniform with the other 3 orbiters.

Columbia’s Twenty-seventh mission would be the fourth servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope such as switching out and adding new components including a new pair or solar arrays to boost the telescopes power and bringing the old ones back to earth, This was Columbia’s first and only trip to Hubble and before this she was only used for solo science missions and was the only One of the 4 orbiters at the time to not be modified for missions to the International Space Station. Unfortunately this would Columbia’s last successful mission as over a year later Columbia was lost during Re-entry on STS-107 in 2003.

Columbia (OV-102) Lifted off on March 1, 2002, just before sunrise at 7:22 AM EST from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Launch Complex 39 with a seven person repair crew including

Pilot: Duane G. Carey
Mission Specialist 1: John M. Grunsfeld
Mission Specialist 2: Nancy J. Currie-Gregg
Mission Specialist 3: Richard M. Linnehan
Mission Specialist 4: James H. Newman
Mission Specialist 5: Mike Massimino

All major objectives and the crew landed back on Earth at Runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center.
