Ecgberht: King of Wessex, Bretwalda and Grandfather of Alfred the Great

In this video we take a look at the life of Ecgberht, King of Wessex, who reigned in the first of half of the ninth century as the Viking Age dawned and intensified in England.

As we shall see, this king done more than any other man to break the dominance of the Kingdom of Mercia, while strengthening his own kingdom Wessex, which would eventually stand alone against the Viking invaders of his grandson's time.
