Maldives on a Budget - Travel in 2021 From India - Our Fulidhoo Story (Diving With Sharks)

Yes, Maldives in a budget is indeed possible. We stayed on a local island called Fulidhoo in Vavu Atoll for 6 days and booked it through Fulidhoo Dive (instagram.com/fulidhoo_dive_maldives/), one of the best dive centers in Maldives. The entire island can be covered on foot - width in 2 minutes and length in 5 mins of walking.

There are two ways to travel in Maldives - Resort Island vs. Local Island.

Local islands are the inhabited islands on which the locals live and where you can enjoy Maldives for subsidised prices. Over here you will find guest-house accommodation, a few restaurants and a couple of shops.

Below I am summarising the benefits vs drawbacks of locals vs. resort islands for you to plan better :)

Resort Islands *

Benefits -
1. Access to alcohol
2. Bikinis are allowed almost everywhere
3. Water villas – These can’t be found on local islands

Drawbacks -
1. Cost – Very very high and not just the room but all the other activities, meals are expensive
2. No local experience - You won’t see how Maldivians live and what their culture is

*Local Islands *

Benefits -
1. Cheaper guest houses
2. If you don’t like the guesthouse, there are a couple of others to choose from an all inclusive diving resort to a super cheap Air BnB
3. Local Experience – You will find schools, fishermen, construction workers over here and see their way of living

Drawbacks -
1. Bikini is restricted to “bikini beaches,” during boat trips, and deserted islands
2. No alcohol

2. We took a speedboat that was arranged by Fulidhoo Dive, but there are government ferries and private transfers too
3. All tourists, along with those who have received both the doses of COVID vaccination, will be required to provide an RT-PCR negative test report (within 72 hours)
4. Documents Required at Immigration - Return tickets, RT PCR report, hotel bookings, health declaration
5. Vaccination certificate is not a mandate though :)
