Mythologically, the story of Lord Ganesha is such that Goddess Parvati had created Ganesh. She used sandalwood paste to create Ganesha so that he could guard her while she was bathing, in the absence of Lord Shiva. When Goddess Parvati stepped out for some time, Ganesha stood guard in front of the bathing hall while Lord Shiva tried to enter. This angered Lord Shiva and he entered into a battle with Ganesha. This resulted in Shiva chopping Ganesha’s head off. After seeing this, Goddess Parvati got enraged and she then transformed into Goddess Kali. She threatened to destroy the whole universe. All the Gods and Goddesses asked Lord Shiva to look for such a solution. He finally found a solution and he asked his followers to find a child and behead him. But there was a condition—the child’s mother should be facing the other way. The first head they found belonged to a baby elephant. Then Lord Shiva attached the elephant’s head to the body and thus, Lord Ganesha was reborn. After this Goddess Parvati calmed down and turned back to her original form. Since that day, Ganesha Chathurthi is celebrated every year.
