Insane breaking story today!
A man has been apprehended following allegations of threatening crew and passengers aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight en route to Kuala Lumpur. The aircraft, Flight MH122, took off from Sydney Airport but had to reverse its course while over the north-western part of New South Wales due to a mid-air emergency incident. This prompted the plane to land back at Sydney International Airport at 3.47pm, causing a delay of approximately three hours as federal police responded to the situation.
Passengers were disembarked from the Airbus A330, which was parked on the taxiway at the southern end of the primary north-south runway, a distance away from terminals and other planes. Australian Federal Police boarded the plane and detained the 45-year-old man. The man is anticipated to face charges later in the night, according to an AFP spokesperson, who also assured the public that there is no imminent threat to the community.
The occurrence led to disruptions at Sydney Airport, resulting in the cancellation of 32 domestic flights and significant delays for numerous others as the airport transitioned to single runway operations. However, this incident is not projected to impact flights on the following day, as affirmed by a spokesperson.
Several passengers recounted the fear they experienced on the plane when the man, described as bald with a grey beard, began shouting in the aisles, carrying a backpack attached to his chest. The man reportedly identified himself as "Mohammed, slave of Allah," asking staff and other passengers if they were also "a slave of Allah." Images later showed passengers being moved away from the man as airline personnel engaged with him.
Malaysia Airlines released a statement indicating that, in the interest of safety, the flight's commander made the decision to return to Sydney.
