This Thursday, October 24th, we continue our October series, the UNIVERSAL MONSTER MASH, at the historic #babcocktheatre with a special screening of Jack Arnold's legendary 1954 creature feature, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON! The last true monster movie made by Universal as they moved away from the gothic horror tales of yore and ventured into the public's intrigue toward science, space, atomic power, and the consequential doors it could open amidst paranoia of the Cold War and the splitting of the atom. This film is memorable and noticeably a striking midpoint between genres- a sort of swan song for the moody monsters that stalk around on foggy nights, as well as a harbinger of the strange creatures that would come to the screen in conjunction with the arrival of scientific advancement!
Most remarkable about this movie is it being the first theatrically released film to use fully functional underwater cameras, and the amazing creature design by criminally undercredited Milicent Patrick- a must see for film fans for those two reasons alone!
A group of scientific researchers venture into the Amazon and are on track to discovering a long theorized missing link in human evolution: a man fish that would forever change the world of science. When the creature is discovered, however, he proves to be defensive and aggressive when provoked, and the situation becomes even more dangerous when the creature takes a liking to the head researchers fiance, hoping to have her for himself!
