Fines

www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/learningthelaw

This video is part of Learning the law, an education kit developed by Victoria Legal Aid for secondary school teachers of students with a mild intellectual disability. The education kit covers four topics: Fines, Driving, Sexting and Consent. Each topic includes a short video, online student activities and a teaching resource with lesson plans and legal information. The education kit was revised and relaunched in April 2017. It is not intended as a stand-alone educational resource.

The Fines video looks at public transport and myki, Authorised Officers and what a young person can do if they get a public transport fine.

[A few uplifting, piano-like notes play.]
Text: Fines
[Melodic, upbeat music playing.]
[Two teenage boys are sitting at a desk with a laptop, some books and a folder on it. One of the boys is playing a car racing game on the laptop. The other is slouched over the desk, watching the laptop screen. In the background a cork noticeboard hangs on the wall.]
Text: Axel 15 [cut away to a shot of Axel, looking downwards as he plays the computer game.]
Text: Raymond 15 [cut away to a shot of Raymond, looking down slightly.]
[Camera zooms out to both boys at the desk.]
Raymond [loudly]: No, no, no!
[Axel laughs over the top of Raymond.]
Raymond [loudly]: C’mon!
[The car on the laptop screen crashes.]
Axel: That’s it, that’s it, you’re off. Move over, loser.
[Raymond and Axel swap spots; Axel sits down in front of the laptop.]
[Raymond stands and notices a paper pinned on the noticeboard on the wall.]
[Close-up of the paper, which looks like a fine and has at the top of the page the words ‘Infringement no’ and a yellow handwritten note attached to it with the words ‘RAYMOND how are you going to pay for this?]

Raymond: [Picks up note that reads it.] Whatever.
Axel [now playing the computer game at the desk]: What?
Raymond: My Dad left me a note on my myki fine.
Axel: That’s weird.
Raymond: He’s a weird guy.
Axel: Like father, like son.
Raymond: I didn’t touch on.
Flashback in still images:

Back to the present: Raymond and Axel at the desk. Axel is playing on the laptop.
Raymond: They always hassle me first.
Axel: Do you want to play again?
Raymond: Nah. [Raymond takes a pen and writes on the fine that he has pulled off the wall.]
[Close-up of Raymond writing on the fine.]
Raymond: “Dad. Why don’t you…”
[Cut away to a shot of Axel playing the game.]
[Close up of Axel’s fingers tapping away at the keyboard.]
Raymond [continuing on]: …pay the fine? You are rich. Your son, Raymond.”
[In the background, the sound of computer keys from Axel playing the game.]
Axel [theatrically, raising his fist]: “Raymond, my son. Why don’t you get a job like the rest of us ‘rich’ old people? You can’t be playing video games all day.”
Raymond [unimpressed]: Thanks, Dad. [Picks up and flicks up the yellow note on the fine, and reads what’s underneath.] Seventy two bucks!
[Raymond scrunches up the fine and puts it in the bin under the desk.]
[The melodic, upbeat music from the start of the film plays.]
