The Supreme Court has overturned a key 1967 judgement that removed the minority status of the Aligarh Muslim University. The ruling was given by a seven-judge bench led by outgoing chief justice DY Chandrachud with a majority of 4 to 3. Reading for the majority, Justice Chandrachud emphasised the importance of identifying the university's actual point of origin. Now the decision to reinstate AMU's minority status lies with a regular three-judge bench. But why was this status struck down, to begin with?
