Northern Railway on Friday (January 3) announced Vande Bharat train schedules for the Katra-Srinagar route, which is slated to open after January 20. The train will run between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) and Srinagar railway station. It will be maintained and operated by Northern Railway (NR) zone.

Indian Railways has commenced train trials on the highly anticipated Katra-Reasi section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. The trials began on Saturday (28 December) and are a crucial step toward operationalizing this segment.

Spanning approximately 18 kilometers, the Katra-Reasi section is a vital part of the USBRL project, designed to enhance connectivity and boost economic development in the region.

This section features advanced infrastructure, including state-of-the-art signaling systems, tunnels, and bridges, engineered to withstand the region's challenging terrain and weather conditions.

The Katra-Reasi section is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters and improve freight transport efficiencies. Beyond connectivity, the new link will provide a reliable and environmentally friendly transportation option for passengers and goods across the region.

"Indian Railways remains fully committed to the timely completion of the USBRL project. With a focus on creating world-class rail infrastructure, the initiative aims to provide passengers with exceptional amenities while meeting international standards," officials stated.

The 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link aims to connect Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country by a broad-gauge railway line. In view of the importance of the USBRL in providing seamless and hassle-free connectivity to Kashmir, it was declared as a “National Project” in 2002.


The Jammu–Baramulla line is a railway track being laid to connect the Kashmir Valley in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir with Jammu railway station and thence to the rest of the country. The 356 km railway track will start from Jammu and end at Baramulla. It comes under the jurisdiction of the Firozpur railway division of Indian Railways' Northern zone. The 359 m (1,178 ft) tall Chenab Bridge lies on this line, which once completed will be the tallest railway bridge in the world.
