Love these throwbacks.. Dino, Dale and Rod were my favorite CAPS growing up. 3 tough & deadly legends.

Heart broke when Gartner got traded. I didn't dislike Dino. Just wish we didn't have to give up my favorite player for him.

@racer14glr91

Dino was a great player, but losing Mike and Larry hurt. Thank goodness Poile was able to "shake things up" by trading Ovi away. May is absolutely right about Murphy. The fans gave him such a hard time! Larry made that trade work out by winning 4 Cups!

That is the season I did become a full-time fan.
I didn't know the fullness of the trade.
Meaning, I didn't grasp what the Caps traded away and the return.

Correct if I'm wrong, but didn't Dino get injured before making his home debut...?
I think he was hurt in a game against the Flyers in Philly.

@dmonsef

Turned out to be a bad trade by Poile. Dino had some good years and Rouse was solid, but Gartner/Murphy were star type offensive players. Poile had a big flaw as a GM. He had a good eye for D-men and goalies, but was not as good regarding high skilled offensive talent. He was that way with the Caps and he did the same thing as GM with the Preds. Gartner needed to be surrounded with better offensive talent and Murphy paired with a stay at home d-man. This is one of the reasons why the Caps had so many playoff failures in the late 80's and 90's. Poile with Abe Pollin's lack of interest owning the Caps lost a very good D-man in Scott Stevens because Pollin didn't want to pony up to paying Stevens. Had Stevens/Murphy/Gartner been kept, who knows the Caps playoff outcomes might have been better with those 3. In hind sight, had those 3 players been kept, we might have never ended up with high caliber players like Ovechkin/Backstrom/Carlson. Loved Dale Hunter, that 1st round draft pick in that trade was Joe Sakic! All these players I mentioned with Gartner being the exception, won multiple Cups after leaving the Caps. Indirectly the Caps helped the Wings, Pens, and Avs win Cups.
