The observation that Red - who committed a crime - got out of Shawshank honestly, while Andy had to commit a crime to escape is brilliant. It's clearly there but I never noticed the dozen times I've seen this. The features of irony like this throughout the movie make the already great story so satisfying.
My brother, who hates watching movies, missed seeing this in English one day, so I talked him into seeing it with me at home. As we were watching it, I could tell that he was getting into it because he referred to the characters by their first names as opposed to, say "the main guy" whenever he asked a question. This truly is a movie that anyone could appreciate.
Here are my thoughts on my ALL TIME favorite movie. This movie has many elements, but one that really stands out is the contrast and the fight between Andy's and Red's characters and convictions. While Andy is a man who really believes in hope, Red thinks it's a trap that only leads to despair. But over time, as the movie progresses, Andy's belief in hope slowly and steadily wins over Red's heart. Finally during the end, when Red reads that beautiful letter from Andy, I think he has internalized that "hope is a good thing." This movie is beyond beautiful.
The perfect movie IMO. Besides Andy getting through it all, Red being saved is the most beautiful part of the story for me
The Shawshank Redemption has always been one of my favorites, I think it's probably still Darabont's greatest achievement as a director. It's incredibly moving and inspirational with incredible performances all the way through, I just can't say enough good things about it.
"Fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free."
Interesting this was largely ignored by the movie audience ...but it grew a massive audience on video and now is quite rightly considered a classic....maybe because the film needs to be watched more than once...
Shawshank Redemption was one of those movies that got me into movies in the first place. I've been hoping for a proper analysis for a while! thanks
This movie is the one that you won't get bored everytime you rewatch it because there are lots of messages in the movie and you would have to find it
You simply cannot describe the plot or the meaning of the greatest cinematic masterpieces. Because they mean more than words can ever describe. They have the power of changing the mindset of a human being for the rest of a lifetime. They are an unforgettable experience. They have a soul.
Red: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.
This is such a good movie, its the type of good that makes you emotional in at the ending. This is one of the rare movies that made me tear up a bit.
3:56 --> so true what you said there. It's so easy to take things for granted and just do the "ahh it's always been like this...so we just gonna keep it this way"
"It truly was a Shawshank Redemption." -- Tandy Miller
I watch The Shawshank Redemption every now and then and basically weep all through the movie. Even the ending is so movingly portrayed that, although it is positive, the music, narration and cinematography all form an uplifting, inspiring picture that it keeps my eyes from drying. I find the whole movie cathartic and have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate it in all its glory. Truly a superb film and the only one that can break me into little pieces whilst I enjoy the experience.
The Thomas Newman soundtrack is just the cherry on top. God, I love this film!
I love The Shawshank Redemption. One of the best Stephen King adaptations.
This movie is absolutely phenomenal!! How can one not love this movie?! It’s one of if not the greatest film ever made!!
This movie also has an armada of great quotes. get busy living or get busy dying, hope is a dangerous thing and its vice versa. and my personal favorite, "That's all it takes really, pressure and time."
