Decades ago, I did an immersive year in Paris with Tulane University and loved it. French all of the time and spending a full year helped me to appreciate the culture and made me a near-native speaker! A couple of things I wish I was more aware of: 1) Understanding the grading system: if you are looking to graduate with a 4.0, that may not happen with a semester or year abroad. The French have a grading scale of 1-20 and no one gets a 17-20 and a 10 was the equivalent of a C. A 10 was passing an acceptable for a French student but if you are looking for that 4.0, probably not a good choice for you. 2) Make sure you have a support system. Are you with other people from your home culture or does your program have a local contact whom you can contact for support? There are a lot of emotional challenges living in a foreign culture and sometime you may need a helping hand.
