A nice tidbit, and I appreciate that the concept is laid out as a way to do things or as a process, not as some innate trait of character. Empathy is often mythologized too much—or people treat it too much as something you can master by adopting a certain attitude towards doing things. Studies have shown that people tend to overestimate their ability or accuracy when it comes to empathy. Having the steps there doesn’t promote the frame of thought where empathy is something otherworldly you tap into.

I tell my students “If you were going to give history another name you might call it ‘empathy’”.

Great stuff. You did get sympathy and empathy definitions the wrong way around though. ;)
