I love the voice over being back because I'm usually eating or working or doing something where my eyes aren't always glued to the screen, so I tend to miss the captions and the stretches of just music are less fun than getting to hear the narration!
Hi Kaelyn! I watched your videos about writing SOPs when applying to graduate programs this year. I'm excited to share that just a week ago I received an offer from Oxford! I'm sure your videos helped me write a better statement. So thank you very much for what you're doing! Now I'm watching your vlogs with your reflections to mentally prepare for my graduate journey! Wish you all the best from Kazakhstan!π
I too listen to Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks when I work. Itβs been non stop since Monday. So productive!
I do love the voiceovers more than text across the screen, especially because you have such a soothing voice! Kate seems like such a sweetheart and so fun to be around! And I am actually realizing the same exact thing β while working on yet another draft of one of my chapters, I was feeling really stuck so I went back to the notes that I received from my committee from the prospectus defense, and it really helped put things back into perspective for me. I then started reading some of the scholarship that inspired me to write the dissertation in the first place and it helped to ground everything all over again! Great video though as usual!
These dissertation vlogs are both soothing to me and motivating. I will be starting my dissertation in the next few months, and even though it is different writing a dissertation in an article based PhD, it's still a dissertation and it really does help to see other people's experiences, even if your field is completely different. π
I realized that I needed to return to the primary sources for my undergrad thesis two days ago and it changed my outlook! crazy to hear that you came to the same conclusion
I really enjoy your voiceover videos! I hope you include more of them. Thanks for sharing!π
I always like those deep and candid moments in the break though. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in that experience! It's very helpful for folks like me dreaming of being in those spaces. Thank youβ€π
I appreciate the thoughts at the end. I am working on a side research while also trying to narrow my topic for my master's dissertation. I feel like I'm finally seeing where my coursework is helping me dig into resources and point me towards the right research question. I also feel very behind in the process though!
Your "time to go study" at 6:15 tricked my brain into study mode...so thank you, i am going to go study now! π
Great video, as always! Could you make a video on writing a thesis proposal (20-25 pages) as a doctoral student, including tips and tricks and things to consider for the thesis defense?
i loved this video kaelyn! its so nice to see you enjoying yourself. I am in the dissertation proposal phase right now and, after doing so much reading for comps, i seem to have gotten really hung up on being afraid that everythingn thats worth writing about my topic has already been written by amazing scholars who have come before me. and it's like well what could i possibly bring to the conversation? and then i have an existential crisis haha.
I'm at an early stage in my PhD and I've always been too focused on data more than theory. What I've been doing these days is to survey the literature widely to see what people have thought about up to this point, and sometimes those theories connect with the data I've been thinking about. So it's actually the opposite of what you found helpful XD
THANK YOU for stating that working on a PhD is TAXING! <3 needed to hear that hha
4:54 Naps are important. They give us power.
Nothing like British weather. My favourite memory was going to Whitby where itβs sunny and rainy every 5 minutes.
Thank you so much Kaelyn for your genuine efforts. Very helpful very informative
Such a helpful little talk about the primary and secondary sources! Really resonates. Thank you β€ Also I love your boba recs, may well try that combo today. Boba is all over Edinburgh!
