I wished that they'd kept Madge in the films. Even though her role was minor, she still was a great friend to Katniss, and it gave her someone else to confide in.
Another thing they cut: Delly Cartwright. The girl that visited a hijacked Peeta in 13. Replacing her with Prim in that scene was utterly mind boggling, since they specifically chose Delly because, while she was familiar to Peeta, her presence wasn't likely to trigger him with memories of Katniss.
Katniss's mom is way more tragic in the book. She loses a close childhood friend to the second quarter quell. She falls in love with someone so deeply that she leaves her entire life behind to be with him, only to lose him tragically and fall into a debilitating depression and deeper into poverty. Watches her young daughter get reaped in her first eligible year, only for her older daughter to volunteer in her place. Has to watch her daughter through the 74th games but gets her back. Only for katniss to be reaped again for the 3rd quarter quell, so she has to rewatch her daughter in a game again. Her entire district is bombed, but she and Prim survive. Goes through the entire war working as a medic. Has to watch her daughter get shot on tv, then she thinks katniss dies in the Capitol. While still thinking Katniss is dead, she loses Prim to a war crime bombing. Gets Katniss back but as a shell of herself. And ends up living basically alone after all that loss.
What I also liked about the books is how they showed the disconnect between the districts. I loved that Katniss had no idea what CPR was when Finnick was reviving Peeta, how could she? She wasn't a doctor and most people in 12 didn't have access to a body of water to nearly drown in. I love that Effie's comment about squeezing coal into pearls was blatantly called wrong by Finnick in the book as well. It showed how truly isolated the districts were and how much they'd have to overcome.
Leaving out Madge was the oddest and one of the saddest ones for me. It showed Katnis could make friends and also highlights her hesitation. Just one reason.
FWIW Peeta's leg was reinjured when the Mutts attacked. Katniss was compelled to use her last arrow as a Tourniquet. Later on Katniss used that arrow to end Cato's suffering at the hands of the Mutts. Peeta's leg was bleeding profusely when they were holding the berries. In the books, Katniss feels enormous guilt because it was either her improper use of the tourniquet, or her removing of it that resulted in Peeta losing his leg...
Rip donald Sutherland
Maybe not as exciting of a tidbit but the friendship that developed between Cinna and Katniss. After the first games they would have long phone calls and he became a confidant. Which is why it was even more brutal what they did to him right before the 75th games started.
A tremendously talented actor and a humble and kind man, a true gentleman. The world mourns his passing. 88 years was just not long enough. RIP Donald Sutherland.
They never honestly touched on the type of PTSD that they Katniss (really all) really endured. They showed a little of it, but not the extent that really drove home in the books with how truly messed up Katniss was.
Its sad to know that at the end of the next Hunger Games film, it will be in memory of Donald Sutherland. May he rest in peace. His amazing performance as one of the best Sci-fi villains will never be forgotten 🙏🏾🕊❤
One thing from the ballad of songbirds and snakes that wasn't in the film was the extensiveness of snows hatred for the mockingjay birds right from the beginning. In the book he goes on and on about how much he hates them. Also the mission to capture the jabberjays and the mockingjays to send back to the capitol, which was led by this one scientist he saw in dr. gaul's lab one time, wasn't really covered that much. That mission took weeks and he really got to learn a lot about the birds during that time, which only intensified his hatred. In the books the irony and connection to katniss and her portrayal as the mockingjay and his hatred for the bird and the district and all those little connections, it's so good! Gives a lot of layers and insight and just full circle moments.
rip to Donald Sutherland who passed away yesterday at 88 😭 We will miss you president snow edit: THANK YOU FOR 700 LIKES! edit: uhh 950!!!!!! edit: my first 1k thank youuuu
I hated the fact that they took out the scene in the 3rd book where Katniss was locked up and she was contemplating suicide. I remember reading that and had to shut the book to cry a little. It’s been over 10 years since reading it but everything leading up to that moment for her to just want to end it all was intense.
7:20 "Snow was assaulted by a peace keeper who stole all his cabbages". Couldn't help but think of the Cabbage Man from Avatar: The Last Airbender. "MY CABBAGES!"💀

I think that The Hunger Games books to movie adaptation is one of the absolute best. They really stayed true to the source material.
So I also wanted to add a theory about Madge (the mayors daughter). In the book, katniss immediately volunteers as soon as prim’s name is drawn. There’s a some emotional words, maybe a couple paragraphs, but it was immediate relative to the drawing. I believe that Madge was going to volunteer initially if she wasn’t drawn, but katniss beat her to the punch. Madge was already wearing the mockingjay pin before the reaping, also cinna had the themes for the wardrobe all mapped out; I believe Madge was in on the rebellion and was going to go in to be either a martyr or the inspiration for the rebellion. Because district 13 was totally preparing for this war. It would make sense that the mayor of district 12 could be in on it, and his daughter agreed (hopefully not forced) to help.
I missed greasy sae at the end of mockingjay. I liked how she came full circle.
