I watched Marco Matterazzi play his only season at Everton in 97/98 and he was an early example of the ball playing CB. He was excellent under pressure and always tried to retain the ball. It was a breath of fresh air after some of the dross that played before him in the 90’s.
Pep's Barca had Pique doing this long ago, Brazil's Lucio, But i think Franz Beckenbauer was the pioneer of this style of CB perfected by Lothar Matthäus.
No wonder why Emery bought Pau Torres so quickly, he had been vital to Villarreal's progression since debut
Frank de Boer, Frank Rijkaard and Ronald Koeman were amazing ball-playing CB's. There were examples of great ball-playing CB's before the '80 and '90, but when the back pass law changed, it was clear the Dutxh had a head start.
Lisandro Martinez is also a beast and underrated, his carries and vision are superb and also his composure on the ball, doesn’t yield to an opposition press
VVD is an absolute monster: Great in defence but adds so much to Liverpool's fast-forward football. Can also contribute the odd goal from a power header too. Awesome quality video with great stats. Would be good to see a vid of the DM evolution and best candidates here in variations? One of the best footie vides I've seen recently.
Favourite center backs, pivot, and midfielder, and right back, It's Johnny Stones!!
Sergio Ramos was the combination of all the above mentioned CBs and more quality in attacking set pieces.. He was an anomaly.
My favourite Centerback is not even a Centerback😂 John Stones. Great video and I already took my notes. Thanks man.
I havent checked it but it would be interesting to see Militao's stats. Very often you see him picking Vinicius with a pinpoint long ball or dribbling through the first line of pressure.
Moore, Beckenbauer and Scirea were the pioneers of this particular approach to center back role. They were really good with the ball and had excellent passing range, but short and long. They were also extra attackers when needed (specially Beckenbauer and Scirea). Baresi (the ultimate defender IMO), Stieleke, Tresor, Passarella, Krol, the other libero from 70's Ajax whose name I don't remember, were also excellent ball-playing defenders. Probably I missed some old players anyway. Then came lots of other defenders with these skills, many of them former CDMs or FBs: Koeman, Rijkaard at Ajax (94), Aldair, Montero, Mihajlovic, Nesta, Stam, De Boer, Maldini (when he played CB), Costacurta (who was far better technically than people give him credit for) Hierro, Onopko, Desailly, Blanc, Matthaus in the latest stage of his carreer, Lucio, Materazzi, Marquez (as good as Pique on the ball but far better all around defender, if you ask me), Ferdinand, Carvalho, Terry (yes, he had fairly good passing range), Bonucci, Pique (one dimensional player lucky enough to be someone's son), Ramos after Mourinho, Varane... My point being, it has always been important to have some order on the build up from the back. It gives the maneuver flow and speed to guarantee possession and a swift transition. Of course in recent times the importance of the role has gone to the limelight. But it has always been there.
You never dissapoint, great video!
Fullbacks letting the ball run is actually an effective way to find strikers and wingers with short or long ball. But thank you for the advice regarding CBs squaring their body to the pitch. This is very useful information.
I love it when Football Meta post keep up the work lad❤
Am here before you get to a million subscribers !!! Your academic perspective on football is amazing
I LOVE these videos. I coach U14, and I am always looking for ways to get all players more involved. I typically use a 4-4-2 diamond and one of my defensive players moves up the field with the others while a player from the opposite side of the field compensates on defense. This not only gives all players more action, it also balances the energy output. One side can rest a bit while the other has a numerical advantage.
Great video, as always. I would love to see a similar video on the importance of goalkeepers in build-up, analyzing the characteristics of some of the world's top keepers within the context of their clubs (whether they use more short or long passes, safe or risky, etc)
I’m sending this to my all my teammates, they need this!!
Saliba is ball player and carrier and monster defender. If his back holds up he will be CB of the season.
